Thank you to all who joined us at our October learning event! The tips and techniques that Laura shared with regards to using visual design and storytelling to persuade others are ones that each of us can utilize immediately in our meetings, training and even our one-on-one conversations, both personally and professionally!

Check out Nancy Duarte's TedxEast talk, The Secret Structure of Great Talks, where she builds upon the ideas Laura shared with us. In her TedxEast talk, Nancy shares her perspective on how we all have the ability to change the world with the strongest device known to man- an idea. From Martin Luther King Jr. to Steve Jobs, she highlights how the most notable speakers throughout history have utilized a specific storytelling "shape" that engages and compels their audiences.

Thank you, Laura, for joining us and sharing the VisualStory® Mini-Workshop with our chapter!

    Some additional resources from Laura:

    • Resonate (Nancy Duarte’s book about storytelling) is also available on the web, so you can read it, refer to it, or share an excerpt with your colleagues any time you want.
    • Be sure to check out Nancy’s book, Slidedocs, to learn how to create memorable, spreadable visual documents right in PowerPoint. It’s amazing what you can do with PowerPoint. And with your download, you’ll receive two additional templates you can use for personal use (if you want to adopt one of these as your corporate template, please ask Duarte.com for a license agreement!)
    • Should you need some extra inspiration for visualizing your information quickly and clearly, please access more than 4,000 diagrams on Diagrammer.com.
    • Some of you may be interested in all the training Duarte offers. No hard sell here – so please check out what they do at Duarte Academy.

Thank you to all who joined us for our September learning event! Attendees walked away with a better understanding of the interplay of organizational culture, employee experience, and customer experience. Additionally, ideas  were gathered regarding how to go about changing culture and assessing how much change an organization can withstand.

Attendees at this month's event also had the opportunity to enter into our raffle to win one of the following- a complimentary registration to an upcoming ATD Certificate Program or a complimentary registration to the ATD Talent Development Across Industries (TDI) Conference. Congratulations to our two member raffle winners!

We'd like to extend our sincerest thanks to Forrester, for being our host and guide through the evening's activities!

Bringing out the best in others may seem like a daunting task, but at this month's learning event, Dr. Ned Hallowell shared some steps to help us all support and inspire our employees. Describing the best job fit as "lighting up the brain," he emphasized the importance of matching each employee with the job where they can leverage his/her talents and strengths.

Another key takeaway was as Dr. Hallowell put it, "the power of the other Vitamin C"....Connection. Great managers find a way to truly connect with their people fostering a relationship that is high on trust and low on fear, thus creating what he believes to be the highest activity of the human mind.

Thank you to all who joined us at our May learning event on the topic of adaptive learning! As Nick Howe, Chief Learning Officer at Area9 Lyceum shared with us,"each learner's brain is different; therefore, learning must be personalized to meet each learner's needs." It was a fascinating session with Nick sharing what it means for a learning program to be adaptive and how learners are often hindered by "unconscious incompetence." We also discussed the brain science behind adaptive learning and how using adaptive learning can drastically reduce training time for learners. Nick, thank you for sharing your knowledge and insight on adaptive learning with us!

Here are a few hand-outs on adaptive learning from Area9, the sponsor of our May learning event.

Mother Nature couldn't stop us on March 14th from exploring the immersive technologies Virtual Reality has to offer! We hope everyone enjoyed learning about mixed reality, virtual reality, and augmented reality- and trying out the experience for themselves during the event! The case studies Hugh shared truly helped listeners to envision how VR is being used by organizations today and what we can expect and prepare for as learning & development professionals in the near future.

A big thank you to Hugh Seaton, CEO of Aquinas, for joining us on March 14th at Suffolk to discuss all things Virtual Reality!

    Here's his presentation... enjoy!
