ASTD Boston September 2011 Meeting

Trainers always want to deliver a great class, but sometimes we worry about being boring or not funny enough. We know a positive learning environment cultivates better learning, and what’s more positive than laughing? Greater Boston’s ASTD Chapter was fortunate to have Mary Cheyne back to help us get more laughs with advice and formulas for becoming a more humorous presenter. Cheyne, the founder of Magnetic Podium, was the keynote speaker at our meeting on Tuesday, September 20 at Rebecca’s in Newton.

Over 50 meeting attendees learned that while most of us are not born funny, we can learn to be funny. Attendees learned simple techniques and methods to add humor to presentations and training sessions. Mary also helped attendees discover their own storytelling and comedic style, including how to recover from a joke that bombs.

Michael Getz started off the evening by demystifying “Moodle” during our popular Tech Talk segment. Getz, from Illumina Interactive, used simple explanations and tips to show the group that Moodle is a Learning Management System that can be used to create effective online learning sites.  He told the crowd that Moodle is an Open Source web application, meaning that it is FREE! We all like FREE!

Attendees also liked the sandwiches and schmoozing with other training and development professionals.

Join Greater Boston training professionals for another great event next month when our topic will be Mobile Learning. The Tech Talk will include demonstrations of mobile learning apps, and our speaker will discuss mobile learning strategies.
