Winter Workshop:

Making Smart Choices in Instructional Design

with Megan Torrance

Friday, January 15, 2021

10:00Am – 4:00pm

VIRTUAL - Register here and you will receive a confirmation email with TorranceLearning's link to join

Ready to take your instructional design to the next level? All too often, instructional designers start with a body of knowledge and a desired modality … and then derive performance objectives from there. In this workshop we’re going to flip that model on its head. We’ll focus on making the smart choices that keep your training relevant, focused and effective by aligning with organizational goals and specific performance gaps. The design of this workshop allows you to practice on your own work projects so you’re getting real work done while you’re learning! (And you’ve got a much more meaningful job aid when you’re done to help you remember key concepts.)

The context for this material is the workplace learning environment, although higher education and K-12 educators are welcome to join. The techniques we’ll discuss apply broadly to face-to-face, virtual classroom, and online self-paced learning of all sorts.

Objectives

At the end of this workshop you will be able to:

  • Align instructional design projects with measurable organizational objectives
  • Define performance gaps
  • Determine whether training will solve the performance problem – or what might work instead
  • Select appropriate practice activities for training
  • Choose modalities for training that are suitable to your environment

Class time & activities

This virtual classroom experience takes place via Adobe Connect over 6 hours (5 hours of active instructional time, with a 30 minute meal break and 10 minute breaks in between topics). We’ll use the following exercises to help connect the learning to your own work:

  • Class discussion (voice and chat)
  • Guided practice on your own work projects
  • Quick polls for understanding
  • Examples provided by class members to illustrate an approach
  • Evidence-informed strategies and examples from actual projects

Takeaways

You’ll keep the following tools to apply later:

  • Business Goals & Learner Goals template
  • Performance Gaps template
  • Decision Tree: Will Training Solve the Problem?
  • Job aid: Training Modalities
